Farm Business Innovation Show brings opportunity for diversification!

Chandler Watson went to the Farm Business Innovation show at the NEC on Wednesday 7th November 2018. Over 100 seminars were held over the day including an insightful presentation by DEFRA regarding natural capital and the future of environmental land management.

A particular Government objective for the future is to increase the access that people have to the countryside, as it was explained that there are particular health benefits associated with this. Therefore, rural diversification of an agricultural holding into, for example, a glamping site will provide guests with access to open green spaces and will also bring secondary spending to the local rural economy, e.g. country pubs, local attractions etc.

It was clear that the Government want to help farmers and land managers in remote areas respond to the specific challenges and opportunities that arise from leaving from the EU. Producing high-quality food, maximising environmental benefits and diversification are all opportunities, but it is recognised that these will be defined by the surrounding landscape and by investment potential.

There are many diversification opportunities available to farmers, especially in the accommodation market with the number of 'staycations' on the rise and set to remain for the foreseeable, with families looking for alternative ways to holiday on a budget in the great British countryside.

Other forms of diversification may include renewable energy, farm shops, wedding venue's etc.

There are also various grant schemes available to support diversification ventures, get in contact today to discuss your proposal and whether this could qualify for grant funding.
